Many Computers still run on older Software and need certainly updates. Nearly all software can be downloaded from the net. On occasion a Microsoft Word download can take forever, if your connection is slow. However it is the download is almost all the time the better solution. Even a Microsoft Word download is faster than buying the CD.
However, if you need to be updated, you have to bite the bullet. After some experiences, that my Word version was not able anymore to open .doc files, which are nowadays called .docx files, from my business partners, I decided to make the Microsoft Word download and I updated to Word 2007. After I started the newly installed Word, I was a little bit shocked. Everything, yes really the whole thing had been altered. I was not able to find anything any longer. Even the regular task to open a file was not possible.
The User Interface was very atypical to the standard windows kind. All large software packages look in some way similar since a long time. We have normal elements on the GUI, like a main menu and a toolbar. Especially Microsoft was recognized for consistency. That means the menu was really always present and generally the menu tabs were named more or less equal. I could spot a main menu, but the labels at the tabs were confusing and unusual. The File tab, which was the first in the menu is not present any longer. The File tab is imperative, where is it? Maybe I just have to pinch my nose to open the file I am just thinking of. That is all very puzzling. Than on a second look, I realized a round push button with the Microsoft logo on it in the upper left corner. This push button holds the objects of the previous file tab.
I was so glad seeing that button. Now I could open and save a file. The next task was to look around to find some new functions. Generally there are at least no obvious new abilities in Word. I’m sure there are new functions, but the powerful abilities were always simply invisible. What on the other hand is very visible, is the modern looking toolbar. In the past we had a little menu box flipping down, when we clicked on a menu tab, displaying us the different functions to select from. The exact same commands were also available in the toolbar. The puzzling thing in the previous version was, that the commands were all double.
It was simple to see after the Word download, that this was different now. All commands are merely available once and the click on a menu tab automatically produces the right toolbar below the menu tabs. The now newly labeled tabs open commands, which are ordered by task instead of type. This is a great deal better to understand.
Upgrading with the Microsoft Word download to version 2007 was undoubtedly the right choice. My workflow is much better now after I am used to the new Word technique. The new design and appearance was a great idea.
