Typically, the parasite attacks out of nowhere : users start seeing various popups and alerts that their PC is infected or hackers try to attack the PC. Then a fake alert supposedly coming from Microsoft informs about software that can stop infections : Vista Antivirus Pro 2010 and users have to buy it to stay protected. It is a lie.
